Breville vs De'Longhi comes down to one spec: the Breville Barista Express uses an industry-standard 54mm portafilter, and the De'Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo uses a proprietary one. Both are built-in-grinder semi-automatics at a near-identical typical price ($685.00 vs $699.95 on Amazon, checked September 23, 2026) — the most direct apples-to-apples comparison in this niche.

The Breville uses an industry-standard 54mm portafilter, which means aftermarket bottomless portafilters, upgraded baskets, and replacement parts are widely available — and the compatibility lists on those parts name the Barista Express explicitly. De'Longhi does not publish La Specialista's portafilter diameter at all, and third-party sellers disagree about it, so you are effectively locked into De'Longhi's own accessory ecosystem. That is the clearest practical difference between the two machines. In exchange you get Cold Extraction Technology (cold brew in under 5 minutes) that Breville doesn't offer anywhere in this price range.
Pick the Breville if you think you'll ever want commercial-standard upgrade parts. Pick the De'Longhi if cold brew matters to you and you don't plan on modifying the machine.
The Breville
Breville Barista Express (BES870XL)
Typical price: $685.00
- 1600W, 15-bar pump
- 54mm stainless steel portafilter
- Built-in conical burr grinder, adjustable dose
- 67 oz water tank, single & dual-wall baskets included
Best all-in-one. It's the only machine on this page with both a built-in grinder and a full 54mm portafilter, so grind and dose get dialed in at the machine instead of guessed with a separate grinder.

Check price on Amazon →Portafilter format: the decision that outlives the machine
54mm is an industry format. Bottomless portafilters, precision baskets, dosing funnels and replacement gaskets are all made for it by third parties, so a Barista Express bought today can take an upgraded basket in three years for about $30. The La Specialista Arte Evo uses De'Longhi's own basket format, so the accessory market is whatever De'Longhi sells. Neither is a defect — but one of them is a decision you can revisit later and the other is not. If you are drawn to the commercial standard, note that 58mm, the size used on most cafĂ© machines, appears on our under-$500 page in the Gaggia Classic Pro.
ThermoCoil vs thermoblock
Both machines heat water on demand rather than holding a tankful. The Breville's ThermoCoil is a heating element cast into a coiled water path; a thermoblock passes water through a heated metal block. In practice both reach brew temperature quickly and neither can steam and brew at the same time, which a dual-boiler machine can. The relevant consequence is maintenance rather than performance: narrow heated passages scale faster than a large boiler does, so both of these machines want a filter cartridge and a schedule — see our descaling guide.
The grinders are not equivalent
Breville does not publish a step count for the Barista Express's grinder; it uses a continuous dose dial with an adjustable grind collar. De'Longhi states 8 grind settings on the Arte Evo. Eight steps across the whole range is not many for espresso, where being one notch off changes the shot — for context, the Baratza Encore ESP on our grinder guide dedicates 20 micro-steps to the espresso range alone. If you expect to chase grind precision, budget for a standalone grinder with either machine and treat the built-in one as convenience rather than the final answer.
Which one, in one line each
Breville Barista Express if you want the standard portafilter format and the option to upgrade baskets and accessories later. De'Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo if Cold Extraction matters to you and you are content inside De'Longhi's ecosystem. At $685.00 and $699.95 respectively on Amazon as of September 23, 2026, price is not the tiebreaker — the portafilter is.
